Fess Parker Winery Viognier Santa Barbara Californien 2017
Remember the TV show about Davy Crockett? About the American soldier, adventurer and settler wearing fur hat and leather clothing in battle against villains and Indians? Crockett was played by actor Fess Parker. He would later become a winemaker when the first fur hat, gun and acting career was shelved. Parker bought the farm in 1989 that would become Fess Parker Winery & Vineyard. The area in which the farm is located is in every way far from the fast cars and neon lights of Los Angeles and Hollywood. Here is the landscape that California was in the old days and closest to a landscape davy crockett would have been home in. Soft hills and valleys, meadows and trees and game that live freely. It was the nature that lured Fess Parker to California, and it was here that he wanted to run a cattle farm. In addition, a little wine production could be a supplement. Parker's dream was first and foremost to create a family business that he could leave behind for future generations. Together with his children, he planted five acres of Riesling in 1989 – mostly as a trial. Parker's son, Eli, started as Assistant Winemaker and after three years of training, he took over. Eli Parker planted several vines and began a multi-year project to create a state-of-the-art wine house and accompanying Tasting Room. The same Eli Parker is still involved in the business, which is now run by Tim Snider, Elis Parker's brother-in-law. So that way, the business is still in the family's lap. Opened in 1994, the wine house is built to look like a farm, with a large stone fireplace, stone floors, a large veranda and pictures and other things from Fess Parker's years like Davy Crockett. The settler style is therefore still alive at the same time that the wine house's overriding goal is to become one of the world leaders, searching for the best quality while still being able to consider it a bargain. The grapes for Fess Parkers Viognier come from Camp 4 Vineyard and Rodneys Vineyard, respectively. Rodney's Vineyard consists of 47 hectares, mainly planted with the Rhône varieties Shiraz, Grenache and Viognier. Camp 4 is the family's newest land acquisition. The vineyard, which covers 101 hectares, is mainly planted with Syrah (52 ha), while Viognier covers only just over 4 hectares - in turn, it creates a slightly warm climate and the sandy clay soil almost perfect conditions for this grape variety.
