II by Alpha Omega Napa Valley California 2016
TwoSquared by Alpha Omega is the famous Napa winery's "second wine brand", an idea modeled after top properties in Bordeaux. Here the wine is a little more accessible as a young person (though still with a good storage potential) and the price as well. In the 2016 vintage - which was excellent in Napa by the way - the wine consists of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. The wine ferments in a steel tank and is then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, of which 30% are new and 70% one year old.
Alpha Omega is located in the Napa Valley of California. The winery was founded by Robin and Michelle Baggett, who moved here in 2006. Robin had previously (1998) founded Tolosa Winery in San Luis Obispo, but was now ready to try his hand at the unique terroir a little further north in the Napa Valley. However, the couple is not alone in the task: they also have winemaker Henrik Poulsen with them, who has 19 years of experience in both Europe and Napa Valley. And if you think it sounds Danish, then you are absolutely right - Henrik grew up in Nexø.
Alpha Omega owns fields in Rutherford, and particularly worth mentioning is Thomas Vineyard - a kind of "field laboratory", where they with advanced technology can make accurate measurements of water, weather and maturity, as well as the eponymous Alpha Omega 1155 Vineyard ( after the address of the vineyard) where it says primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
