Mount Brave Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley California 2012
Mt. Brave is located at the northern end of mount Veeder, which is part of the Mayacamas mountain range. The first vines were planted here in the 1860s. Yields are very low, so although the appeal is the largest in Napa Valley, only about 2% of total wine production comes from here.
The vineyard's fields are at an altitude of 400-600 metres, which is above the fog limit, so the fields also benefit from the sun in the morning. The soil layer with gravel, clay and large stones is thin and poor in minerals and nutrients, forcing the vines to develop deep roots. The difficult growing conditions result in small grapes with an intense taste and ripe tannins. It's a rough terrain where pretty much all work has to be done by hand. When harvesting, the small crates of grapes must be carried up and down the steep slopes, both to protect the vines and the thin layer of soil and the harvesters. This is a juggernaut of a great vintage.
