G. D. Vajra Barbera d´Alba DOC Piedmont 2018
G.D. Vajra wines are best recognized by the slightly cool and elegant style, which is due to the fact that a large part of the fields are located at an altitude of 400 meters in the village of Vergne in Barolo. G.D. Vajra was founded in 1972 and is named after the father of Giuseppe Domenico, the current owner, Aldo Vajras. Since taking over the day-to-day management of the vineyard, Aldo has gradually increased the area of vineyards to today 40 ha, of which 10 are planted with Nebbiolo and located on vineyards such as Bricco delle Viole, Fossati, La Volta and Coste di Vergne. Despite its elegant and cool style, Vajra should be considered a traditionalist for the area, albeit with certain modifications, as he i.a. temperature controls its fermentation and uses a very limited proportion of barriques (typically 5-8%). The grapes for Vajras Barbera d'Alba are sourced from six different vineyards, all located in the two municipalities of Elveziano and Tortoniano. The soil has a high content of lime, which originates from deposits made several million years ago. This type of soil gives the wines exactly the crispness and acidity that characterizes a good, well-balanced Barbera d'Alba.
