Taylor's Port
Quita de Vargellas Vinha Velha Vintage 1995 - 3 bottles
The first Vargellas Vinha Velha ever made. In the 1995 harvest, it was exceptionally decided to select the best vines from vinha velha and pick their grapes separately. This rare wine represents the quintessence of one of the world's great vineyards.
The wines from Quinta de Vargellas traditionally form the 'backbone' of the Taylor Vintage Port blend. Recognized as one of the world's finest vineyards, this unique estate was acquired by Taylor's in 1893, although its reputation as a source of the finest Port wines dates back to the 1820s. Located in the far east of the Douro Valley, Vargellas is known for its elegant, fragrant wines with their fine focused fruit and well-integrated sinewy tannins. It is also known as a source of one of the rarest and most collectable vintage ports of all, Vargella's Vinha Velha, made in very small quantities from products from the oldest vines on the estate.
The terraced houses with the oldest vines on the property account for over 15% of the estate's total production. Vargella's Vinha Velha vintage port represents a very limited selection of the production of these old vines and rarely accounts for more than about 2% of the total production of the estate.
Vargella's Vinha Velha may well be the most elusive and collectible of all Vintage Ports. Only eight Vinha Velha vintage ports have been released to date. Vinha Velha Vintage Ports are sold by strict allocation and to allow the very limited quantities to be distributed as widely as possible, they are only shipped in cases of three bottles.
