Quinta do Pégo Vintage 2016
For the first time in the history of Quinta do Pégo, they have chosen to declare vintage port two vintages in a row. Vintage 2016 is a formidable vintage, which is why a large proportion of manufacturers have somewhat atypically chosen to declare vintage port in both 2015 and 2016. From Pégo's side, this is fully understandable, as these two vintages here from the domain are of such excellent quality that in the long run they can develop into the two best vintage port vintages that Pégo has produced to date. The wine is produced by Rozès ’winemaker Manuel Henrique under the supervision of Wouter Pienaar. The grapes for the port wine come from ancient vines that existed on the vineyards of Quinta do Pégo when the current owner took over the farm. Quinta do Pégos Vintage Port 2016 appears dark red in the glass with an intense nose with black currants, black cherries, mint, chocolate, herbs and floral undertones. In the mouth it is concentrated with sweet fruit, crisp acid and well-integrated tannins. A blast of a long-lived Vintage Port that should be served chilled, and which is particularly suitable as an "after-meal drink" or for strong cheeses, chocolates and desserts. Wine Enthusiast 97 points The wine has great swathes of black fruit at the same time as powerful tannins. That makes for a rich balanced wine, destined for long-term aging. There is a floral element that will soften and broaden out to give a satisfyingly ripe, never too sweet, wine. Drink from 2028.
