Pierre Jean Villa Saint-Joseph Préface Rhone 2017
Préface is Pierre Jean Villa's first wine. It is made from 100% Syrah from the south / southeast facing slopes of Saint Joseph, which is one of the major appellations in the Nordrhône - and Préface is usually also the wine that the house makes the most of. The vines that supply the grapes are between 30 and 90 years old and the grapes are partially stalked before fermentation. Typically, it is the grapes from the oldest vines that ferment with the stems on. Eventually, the wine is stored for about 12 months in both 500-liter casks called demi-muids and smaller casks.
Pierre Jean Villa learned the profession of winemaker in the 1990s in Burgundy at Mommesin - one of the area's big names. When he returned home to the Rhône in 2003, he became part of the Vins de Vienne, and in 2009 he found the time ripe to start his own business. It has now flowered up to 14 hectares of vineyards spread across the Rhône, including the Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. The wines are made with the greatest respect for land and grape, and the "non-interventionist" approach includes, among other things, spontaneous fermentation and almost no filtration. From the 2015 vintage, mainly used barrels are used for storage.
Alongside Pierre's Rhône adventures, he also started a Burgundy house alongside another prominent wine figure: Olivier Decelle. The two houses, Pierre Jean Villa and Decelle-Villa, share the vision of clean, terroir-driven and elegant wines.
