Campbeltown was once Scotland's whisky capital with more than 30 legal distilleries towards the end of the 19th century. But like many other distilleries, Glengyle had to surrender due to the catastrophic economic conditions in the wake of World War I. The liquor ban in the United States contributed to an exacerbation of the crisis, and by 1934 there were only two distilleries left in Campbeltown; Glen Scotia and Springbank.
