Château Troplong Mondot 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint-Émilion 2013 – Power, terroir and greatness from the heights

Château Troplong Mondot Premier Grand Cru Classé Saint-Émilion 2013 is a distinctive and characterful wine from one of the area’s most spectacular terroirs. The château sits 110 meters above sea level on a plateau southeast of Saint-Émilion town, with breathtaking views and soils that create wines of intensity, structure and depth.

Classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé B, Troplong Mondot is one of the leading properties in the appellation – and with neighbors like Château Pavie, its location is a testament to its excellence. The 2013 vintage is crafted with precision and uncompromising selection, resulting in a wine with elegance, freshness and classic structure.

The blend consists of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, resulting in a wine with generous fruit, great backbone and complexity. Production levels are low and the total production of both first and second wines is around 110,000 bottles annually – a clear focus on quality.

Serve at 16-18°C and give it air before serving. Ideal with beef, braised dishes, lamb or mature cheeses.

History of the house

Château Troplong Mondot was built in 1745 by the de Sèze family, while the first vineyards were planted around 1850. The castle has had a varied history and was bought in 1936 by Parisian wine merchant Alexander Valette. In 1980, his great-granddaughter Christine Valette took over the property.

With no experience in winemaking, Christine allied herself with the later world-famous oenologist Michel Rolland. His philosophy of late-harvested grapes, extreme selection and low yields – combined with a total ban on machine harvesting – significantly improved quality over the following decades.

The estate has 43 hectares of vineyards and since 1985 also produces the second wine Mondot. Today, Troplong Mondot stands as an icon in Saint-Émilion – a château where ambition, terroir and craftsmanship come together.
