Sangenis Vaqué Garbinada Grenache, Carignan Priorat Spain 2023
Sangenis Vaqué Garbinada Grenache & Carignan
Priorat Spain 2023
A seductive red wine from the heart of Priorat
Experience the essence of Spain’s legendary Priorat with Garbinada 2023 – an irresistible red wine crafted from 60% Grenache and 40% Carignan. Named after the refreshing maritime breeze “Garbinada,” which cools the vineyards around the village of Porrera during the hot summer months – and you can taste it in the wine. Garbinada is an unfiltered red wine with no oak aging, which means you get the pure, fresh character of the grapes with plenty of juiciness, depth, and structure – exactly what you'd expect from a true DOQ Priorat wine. The wine is vinified in old underground cement tanks (known as cubs), lined with ceramic tiles – a method that preserves the grapes’ natural energy and the authentic expression of the terroir. Perfect for those seeking a true Priorat experience – full-bodied, mineral, and vibrant.
Tasting Notes – Garbinada 2023
The color is deep ruby red with purple hues. On the nose, the wine offers intense notes of dark berries, cherries, and herbs, followed by a hint of licorice and the distinctive minerality from Priorat’s llicorella slopes.
On the palate, it is tight, elegant, and juicy, with ripe tannins and a long finish where notes of plum, black tea, and forest floor unfold. A wine with both energy and finesse that will evolve beautifully in the glass.
Serving suggestions: Perfect with grilled meats, lamb dishes, tapas, or aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C.
The story behind the wine – Sangenís i Vaqué, Porrera
It all began in 1978, when Pere Sangenís and Conxita Vaqué replanted the family's old vineyards around Porrera in Priorat – an area known for its unique slate soil, llicorella, and wines with soul and power. But the family’s roots in wine go deeper. Conxita’s grandfather, Josep Simó, was a winemaker and wine merchant from 1886, and the cellar in Plaça Catalunya, where the wine is still made today, was his original winery. Today, the next generation – daughters Maria and Núria – run the estate together with their father, with respect for tradition and a love for innovation. All vineyards lie within the boundaries of Porrera, and production is deliberately kept low – meaning every bottle of Garbinada is a concentrated expression of nature, heritage, and craftsmanship.
