This 2020 vintage was a challenging vintage for everyone on the West Coast of the United States. There were Covid-19 outbreaks and Oregon experienced one of the worst wildfires in history, which brought concerns about smoke-affected fruit. The silver lining to Elk Cove is that our vines are located in the northwest corner of the Willamette Valley where smoke impacts were minimal. Due to Covid-19 which brought labor and safety challenges which Elk Cove overcame
in line with increased seasonal requirements in the vineyard and cellar. At the same time, Elk Cove's vines are 6 feet (1.8 meters) apart and suitable for social distancing, but creative solutions saved the day.
The Pinot Blanc grapes are all hand harvested from our own hillside vineyards, including our Five Mountain, Mount Richmond and Estate vineyards. To preserve freshness, the Pinot Blanc grapes are whole pressed in the clusters and then fermented at very cool temperatures in small stainless steel tanks, all of which accentuate aromatics and increase the richness and viscosity of the wine.
