In June 1838, the Danish government officially appointed Albert Heinrich Riise as exclusive apothecary on the island of Saint Thomas in the West Indies and gave him monopoly status to manufacture alcohol in his pharmacy. Initially, Albert developed rum and bitters as medicine for stomach ailments. In 1893, the old A.H. received Riise Company's first international recognition at the World's Fair in Chicago.
