Distilled in 2020 and bottled at full strength of 59% alcohol – with no dilution and no filtration – the rum appears exactly as the casks have shaped it. This edition is created as a Small Batch based on two carefully selected casks, adding complexity and balance while maintaining the uncompromising Single Cask character.

Ex-Sherry PX – Small Batch – Full Proof

The rum is aged in ex-Sherry PX casks, adding intense depth, dark fruit, raisins and warm spices. The PX casks contribute a rich, almost vinous sweetness that perfectly complements the high alcoholic strength, creating a rich, concentrated and elegant whole. Two of “Pao” is a rum that develops significantly in the glass and rewards the patient drinker.

The release is part of the exclusive Unsun Karuta series, inspired by traditional Japanese playing cards. Created as a tribute to the last casks from the distillery’s warehouse, the series marks the end of one of Japan’s most cult rum distilleries.

Tasting notes

Nose: Intense and complex with notes of raisins, dried figs, dark molasses, sherry, cocoa and warm spices. Elegant depth with a subtle floral touch.

Taste: Rich and powerful with layers of caramelized sugar, dark chocolate, orange peel, dried fruit and spices. The alcoholic strength is pronounced but nicely integrated, providing structure and length.

Finish: Very long and persistent with sherry notes, spicy oak, dark fruit and an elegant, dry finish.

History of the house

Nine Leaves distillery was founded in 2013 by Takeuchi Yoshiharu in the town of Otsu in Shiga Prefecture. Drawing inspiration from both Caribbean rum tradition and Japanese craft philosophy, Nine Leaves created a unique style of rum characterized by purity, precision and uncompromising respect for the raw materials. The distillery closed in 2023, making all remaining bottlings extremely sought after by collectors around the world.

The Unsun Karuta series represents the final chapters of the distillery – and Nine Leaves 2 Casks – Two of “Pao” 2020 is not only an outstanding Japanese rum, but a rare piece of liquid heritage.
