The cane plant, Rum´s primary indredient, is the natural source of its flavour. Thus the land on which it grows & its microclimate determines its character. Therefore we choose to explore the terroirs of Grenada - Captured here as fresh, vibrant spirit before cask ageing.

On the southern coast, protected from the full force of the Atlantic trade winds, Old Bacolet was one of the first areas to be cultivated by the French. A flat flood plain between two small rivers, these alluvial soils –Plains Clay Loam and Woburn Clay – and a high water table produce lush cane. For this rum we harvested the quick-growing variety we call Cain from Josh’s field, which stands on the terroir known as Riverside.

At Old Bacolet farm an extensive vista of cane made up of multiple varieties thrives across almost 25 acres. The land – close to the coast, but far enough inland that the soil is rich and moist – has been farmed since the 1800s. Indeed sporadic coconut, papaya, mango and other trees in and around the fields still showcase the land’s fertile value. The river that flows through Old Bacolet brings a cooling breeze on the way to the sea.

We believe in a novel approach to create the most sophisticated rum. Our answer lies with the cane plant grown on the caribbean island of Grenada. It is on our windward island farm that terroir - that beguiling interaction of soil, microclimate & place - Influences growth, life, & is thus the very birth of our natural flavour.
The terroir of Grenada stand on dormant volcanos, in the face of salt-laden, atlantic trade winds, or nestled in fertile river basins. Each one yields up different flavours, individual characters - if one chooses to search for them.

The modern marvel that is the Renegade Rum Distillery was cinceived precisely with this purpose in mind: To mill & distill fresh cane harvested for ultimate provenance - Farm by farm, terroir by terroir, field by field.

Purity of flavour, intensity of definition an artisanal belief, rejecting accepted industry processes & additives, to reveal the true essence of place.

This is for the curious of mind, the quizzical of spirit, to explore with us the boundaries of real rum, to find our answer to the "What if?"

Ascending into the mountains of St. Andrew, on the island's north-eastern coast, nestles Dunfermline – once a venerable distillery lost to Hurricane Ivan, where for centuries its clay loam has been conducive to cane cultivation. For this rum we harvested the sucrose-rich variety we call Lacalome Red from "Anderson's Field", which stands on the terroir known as Mango lane.

Today four terroirs spread the 26.22 acres of farmland with four varieties of cane. But Dunfermline was acquired in 1953 by father and son Ferdinand Henry and Dennis Henry. At the time, the Estate was 992 acres of land with various crops, the main ones being Coconut, Cocoa, Bananas, Limes and Nutmeg for local sale and international export. In the 1970s and 1980s, the estate thrived, employing up to 150 people.

Rum Nation Small Batches Rare Rum
British Guyana Rum

Origin: Guyana
Distilled at: Enmore Distillery
Distilled: 1997
Bottled: 2020
Age: 23 years
Bottles in all: 670
Strength: 57,6%

A vatting of two very old rums of same age: One with 4 years finished in a Sherry Cask, and one with 3 years and half years finish in a whisky barrel.
The result is fruity, intensely estery, rich with aromatic notes of cinnamon, cloves and camphor. The sherry cask adds notes of raisins and ripe dates to an otherwise very dry rum, and the balance the two types of wood, between the sweetness and the naturally sharp profile of this type of still, is impeccable.

Age: 30 years

Strength: 56,8%

A wonderfull intense and heavily rum from a traditional single pot wooden still. It has a flamboyant nose full of funky ester, farmy notes and a sligth winery touch inherited by the short finishing in a sherry hogshead which had previosly contained scotch whisky. It´s a fat, wild and unruly rum, with the edges smoothed out by the age, but still quite unpredictable. The long influence frim the oak is noticeable in the thinck tannins, which nonetheless still allow the pungent style of the distillate to shine

The garden of the West Indies
If rum has an absolute origin, it must be in the West Indies. Christopher Columbus discovered the islands on his second voyage to the New Wolrd in 1493. With him he brougt, among other things, sugar cane. The most suitable island growing sugar canes was St. Croix. Due to its lush nature, it was nicknamed "The Garden of the West Indies".

St. Croix was the center of sugar cane agriculture in the Danish West Indies from the early 1700s. But sugar was no t the only commoduty. It soon became apparent that the residual product molasses could be used for the distillation of a sweet, aromatic alcohol.

One of the pioneers in the production of West Indian um was the Danish pharmacist Albert Heinrich Riise, who lived and worked in the Danish West Indies from 1838 - 1878. His pharmacy in the capital Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas, produced bitters and rums as medicine for stomach pains and other sickness. His rum quikly became popular, and in 1893 the old A.H. Riise company placed Danish West Indian rum on the world map and recieved international recognition at the World Exhibition in Chicago.

A.H. Riise developed and refined strong brands such as "Old St. Croix Brand", Riises Guave Rum", A.H. Riise rum, and more. In the aftermatch of his succes, Riise was awarded many honorary positions on the islanbd of St. Thomas. Amongst others he became the Director of the National Bank of St. Thomas and was made Knight of the Order of Dannebrog in 1860 abd Kinght of the Royal Order of Vasa in Sweden.
