Celebrating the history of royal Navy Rum
Black Tot Master Blender´s Reserve resurrects the art of rum blending pioneered by the British Royal Navy. Our 2023 edition brings together blended rums from Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad and Grenada alongside a reserve of rum kept back from last year´s Master Blender´s 2022 release.

Each component has been crafted from a range of aged rums from each country, exploring the individual layers of flavours and textures from the different marques and maturation cycles. The final blend is a celebration of the diversity of rum, a spirit that brought people together from across the world for hundred years.

For more than 300 years, the sailorts of the British Navy enjoyed a tot of rum for every day of their service. The loss of the rum nation on 31. July 1970 is mourned as Black Tot Day.

The rum the sailors dranks was aged in a solera containing rums of all aged, sourced from all over the former British colonies. The rich heart of this blends was Demerara rum from Guyana.

This wonderfully rich and weighty rum was made from dark, rich molasses. It was distilled on the Caribbean island of Guyana in 1975 and has been ageing in barrels for more than 40 years. It is a pure rum with no sugar added, and all the flavour comes from the combination of incredeble spirit, high-quality casks and time.

A.H. Riise is known for being uncompromising when it comes to creating the ultimative drink.

Albert Heinrich Riise, the son of a sailor from the wonderful Danish island of Ærø, who travelled the world and set up as a pharmacist and rum maker in the West Indies, was a restless soul and made both rum and went on expeditions to hunt for new species in the plant or animal kingdom. A great many plant, amphibians and fish have the world "Riisea" in their Latin name, thus after the man who first discovered and described the new spicies.

To his contemporaries, A.H. Riise was known for his uncompromising approach to his work and the same can said of the company A.H. Riise today when we create the ultimate drink.

A.H. Riise´s "Master Blender Collection" is composed of the best casks we have. In pther words, "Master Blender Collection" is a meticulous blend with the best and most refined spirits we have been able to get our hands on.

"Master Blender Collection" is made as Small Batch, yet we strive to ensure that each batch is an accurate reproduction of the preceding batch. However, with such small batches, minor differences in tastes, aromas amd colour are bound to occur. It is all part of the charm and adventure, if you ask us, and only goes to show the craftmansship needed to create such a blend.

The bottle is sharped like a pyramid. In fact, the world pyramidicial can also mean "colossal" and "second to none". In all modesty, that is exactly what we believe to have created with "A.H. Riise Signature", which is part of the A.H. Riise "Master Blender

A Brief history of the Rum Tot
On July 31st 1970 a 300 year-old Royal Naval traditon ended at precisely 6 bells in the forenoon wacth when the last rum ration was issued aboard ships og the British Royal Navy
- A day to be forever remembered as Black Tot day

Original Royal Navy records confirm that the rum used for the rum ration was most likely imported from the West Indies in oak casks by E.D. & F. Man & Co. Official rum merchants to the Navy since 1784. It was transferred into large oak marrying vats in the hostoric victualling warehouses of Deptford in east London, Gosport or Devonport from where it was despatched to British Royal Navy ships.

With the withdrawal of the rum ration, the British Royal Navy had little use for the remaining rum stocks which were filled into wicker clad stone flagons and transferred to HM Bonded warehouses where it lay undisturbed to British Royal Navy ships.

This bottle of Black Tot contains the Last Consignment of the original Royal Navy rum and was bottled frim the original imperial gallon stone flagons into which it had been filled and sealed under HM customs and excise supervision in december 1970.

The blend is truly dark and deep and appraise the traditions of dar Jamaican and Guyanase rum. Its increased yet balanced sweetness enhances the blends pleasing tropical flavors and makes for a lingering finish.

A quest for the very essence of rum
If rum has an absolute origin, it must be in the West Indies. Christopher Columbus discovered the islands on his second voyage in 1493. With him he brought sugarcane and found optimal conditions. The most suitable island for growing sugarcane was St. Croix. Due to its lush nature, ot was nicknamed "The Garden of the West Indies". It was from these sun-drenched islands that Albert Heinrich Riise sourced molasses from sugarcane when he started his rum-adventure in 1838. And in the following years, he made many journeys around the Carribean in his search for the highest quality ingredients. A never-ending quest for quality that still characterizes A. H. Riise Spirits to this day.

Black Coral is a rare type of coral that can be found deep in the waters that surround the West Indies and Central America. It is a product of the fertile environment that also provides nourishment and minerals to the sugarcanes used in our "Black Gem Collection". Black Coral is valued for its unique color and appearance. When properly polished black coral can achieve a beautiful shine and luster.

To create this bottiling I have worked with a boutique producer of some of the finest Sherry wines from Jerez de la Frontana who are experts in the use of the Pedro Ximénez grape variaty. Their production philosophy and family values perfectly match those of our own here in Arran. In 2016 I travelled to Jerez and had the privilege of selecting some of their very best oak casks from their Palo Cortado "1964 Solera" to bring back to Lochranza. This secondairy maturation affords the whisky a luxurious mouthfeel, hints of almond and an elegant salinity which pairs beautiful with the inmate fruitness of the Arran malt.
