Bachelder Wismer Foxcroft Gamay Noir Niagara, Ontario 2023

Bachelder Wismer Foxcroft Gamay Noir 2023 is an impressive single-vineyard wine from Niagara, Ontario, where Thomas Bachelder demonstrates just how elegant and terroir-driven Gamay can be. The wine comes from the renowned Wismer Foxcroft Vineyard and is part of the Cru de Niagara – Single Vineyard series, in which each vineyard is vinified separately to highlight the region’s unique character.

The grapes are grown in Twenty Mile Bench, one of Niagara’s most sought-after wine regions, where calcareous soils, cool nights, and the moderating influence of Lake Ontario create perfect conditions for Gamay. In the 2023 vintage, 32% of the grape clusters were fermented whole, adding extra complexity, structure, and aromatic depth. Fermentation takes place with natural wild yeast, and the wine is aged in used French oak barrels, ensuring that the terroir and fruit remain the stars of the show.

The result is a Gamay with great finesse, vibrant freshness, and a mineral precision that brings to mind the best wines from Beaujolais, yet with a distinctively Canadian character. It is a wine with both elegance and aging potential that develops beautifully in the glass.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Fresh cherries, raspberries, and wild strawberries combine with violets, crushed stones, and a hint of white pepper. Subtle notes of herbs and light spices add extra depth.

Palate: Silky smooth and lively with red berries, pomegranate, and ripe cranberries. The chalky minerality, fresh acidity, and partially whole grape clusters provide structure, elegance, and a lovely complexity.

Finish: Long and precise, with red berries, delicate spices, light tannins, and a mineral finish that lingers.

The Winery’s History

Thomas Bachelder is among Canada’s most renowned winemakers and has dedicated his career to mapping Niagara’s terroirs with the same level of detail found in Burgundy. Each individual vineyard is treated as a distinct cru, where soil, microclimate, and location are allowed to define the wine’s style.

Bachelder does not own his vineyards but collaborates with some of Niagara’s most experienced winegrowers. The focus is on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Gamay, all of which thrive in the region’s cool climate. All wines are fermented with natural wild yeast and aged in used French oak barrels to preserve the purity of the grapes and the region’s terroir. This philosophy has made Bachelder one of the leading producers of terroir-driven wines in Canada.
