Quinta do Noval Colheita 2009 Tawny Port – elegant vintage Tawny from a Douro icon
Quinta do Noval Colheita 2009 Tawny Port is a classic and refined port from one of the Douro Valley’s most famous producers. A Colheita is a Tawny Port from a single vintage that is aged for many years in wooden casks. The result is a Port with great elegance, depth and a beautiful balance of ripe fruit, nutty nuances and freshness.
The 2009 vintage clearly shows the house style. The wine is harmonious, complex and develops fine layers of aromas in the glass. The long barrel ageing gives a soft structure and a beautiful amber tone. At the same time, it retains a freshness that gives life and elegance to the wine.
Colheita Ports from Quinta do Noval are known for their precision and finesse. The grapes are carefully selected from the house vineyards in the Douro. After fermentation, the wine is aged in oak barrels for many years. During aging, the wine develops its characteristic Tawny style with complex aromas and silky smooth structure.
In the glass, the wine is elegant and inviting. It is perfect for desserts with nuts, caramel or dried fruit. It is also excellent with aged cheeses or as a finishing glass after dinner.
Tasting notes
The aroma offers ripe fruits, dried figs and roasted nuts. There are also notes of caramel, spices and light hints of orange peel. The palate is soft and complex with hints of prunes, almonds and dried fruits. The finish is long, elegant and harmonious.
The history of the house
Quinta do Noval is one of the most famous estates in the Douro Valley. The name was first registered in the Land Registry in 1715. Today, the house is owned by the French insurance company AXA, which also owns several famous chateaux in Bordeaux, including Château Pichon Longueville Baron.
Quinta do Noval is located in the heart of Cima Corgo, the central and most prestigious part of the Douro. The region is known for Port wines of great depth and quality. The other two areas of the Douro are Baixo Corgo and Douro Superior.
Historically, the port casks were transported down the Douro River in long, flat-bottomed boats called rabelos. Later, the railroad took over and in modern times, trucks have made transportation faster. Today, developments have changed production significantly. Many port wines are fermented, aged and bottled directly on the quinta in the Douro.
Quinta do Noval was a pioneer in this development. The house was among the first to move the entire wine production to the Douro Valley. The port wines are stored in large cellars under the vineyards. The modern winery combines new technology with old traditions. The grapes are still trampled with their feet in large lagares. The wines are then aged in barrels for anywhere from a few years to several decades. This careful aging ensures Port wines of great quality and character.
