Gaja Dagromis Barolo 2015 – classic Barolo with elegance and depth from Gaja
Gaja Dagromis Barolo 2015 is an elegant and characterful Barolo from one of Italy’s most famous winemakers. The wine is made from Nebbiolo grapes from some of the most coveted vineyards in the Langhe. The result is a classic Barolo with great finesse, depth and ageing potential.
In 1995, Gaja acquired the historic Gromis estate in La Morra. With the purchase came 10 hectares of vineyards in the heart of the prestigious Cerequio estate. Cerequio is considered one of the best vineyards in the entire Barolo area. It produces wines with elegance, complexity and great aromatic depth.
Dagromis – which until 2000 was called Gromis – is composed of Nebbiolo grapes from several excellent terroirs. The grapes come primarily from the Cerequio and Silio vineyards in La Morra and a parcel in Serralunga d’Alba. The soils consist of limestone and clay, giving the wine structure, finesse and aromatic complexity.
The 2015 vintage in Barolo was characterized by good ripening conditions. The grapes achieved great concentration and a harmonious balance between fruit, acidity and tannin. The result is a Barolo with intense fruit, classic structure and great elegance.
Vinification takes place in Gaja’s wine cellar in Barbaresco. Each parcel is vinified separately to preserve the individual character of the terroir. Fermentation takes place in steel tanks with the grapes’ own natural yeast.
After malolactic fermentation, the wines are first aged for a year in barriques. Around 30% of the barrels are new, with half coming from the Allier in France and the rest from other European forests. The wines are then blended and aged for a further 18 months in large wooden barrels, adding balance and complexity.
Gaja Dagromis Barolo 2015 shows great structure, deep fruit and an elegant style. It can be enjoyed now after an hour of decanting, but will also develop beautifully in the cellar for many years.
