Nikka Miyagikyo Apple Brandy Wood Finish 2020 is a very special Limited Edition, created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the marriage of Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru and his Scottish wife Rita (Jessie Roberta Cowan). On January 8, 1920, they were married in Glasgow – and this bottling is a beautiful tribute to their love and life’s work together.

This edition is based on the elegant Miyagikyo Single Malt, which is then finished in apple brandy casks and bottled in 2020 at 47%. Apples have a special symbolic meaning for Nikka, as in the early years Masataka produced apple juice and jam while waiting for his first whisky to mature. The apple is therefore inextricably linked to the story of Rita and Masataka.

The result is a fruit-intense and refined Japanese single malt, where the classic Miyagikyo elegance is lifted by a juicy and aromatic fruit profile from the apple brandy casks.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Full and rich with fresh apples, juicy pears and notes of malt, grain and light leather. A new wave of fruit brings out banana and ripe peach.
• Palate: Silky and elegant with concentrated fruit, subtle peat smoke and well-balanced wood notes with a hint of sherry.
• Finish: Long and complex with white fruit, toasted bread notes and elegant hints of licorice and vanilla.

The history of the house

Nikka Whisky was founded by Masataka Taketsuru, considered the father of Japanese whisky. After studying in Scotland, he brought the traditional Scottish art of distilling with him to Japan and founded his own distillery. The Miyagikyo distillery is known for its elegant, fruity and soft style – a beautiful counterpoint to Nikka’s more powerful Yoichi expression.
