Taylor’s 1977 Vintage Port – Iconic classic from Douro

Taylor’s 1977 Vintage Port is one of the most legendary vintages in the history of Port. 1977 stands as a benchmark year in the Douro, and at Taylor’s this vintage was elevated to a level that still ranks among the great classics today. A monumental Vintage Port with power, depth and an impressive ability to age gracefully.

Whether you’re looking for Taylor’s 1977 Vintage Port, a classic Vintage Port from the Douro or a collector’s Port with documented historical significance, this is a wine that offers both investment value and a unique taste experience.

Only the best grapes – only the greatest years

Taylor’s only declares Vintage Port in the absolute best years. A small and specially selected portion of the grapes are hand-picked from the house’s iconic vineyards:

  • Quinta de Vargellas
  • Quinta de Terra Feita
  • Quinta de Junco

Only the most viable and concentrated grapes are used. After fermentation, the best barrels are selected and aged for about 2 years in oak – two winters of continuous tasting and evaluation. If there is even the slightest doubt about the quality, the wine is not declared. Only when the potential is extraordinary is it bottled and released as a classic Vintage Port.

The grapes for this wine were harvested in 1977 and bottled in 1979.

Tasting notes

  • Color: Deep garnet red with dark core and incipient brick nuances with age.
  • Aroma: Intense aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, dried figs, licorice and spices.
  • Flavor: Rich and concentrated with ripe dark fruit, chocolate, tobacco and silky yet vibrant tannins.
  • Finish: Long, complex and harmonious with persistent fruit and spicy elegance.

A historic milestone

1977 was not only an epoch-making vintage for Taylor’s – it was also the year that electricity was first installed at Quinta de Vargellas. A symbolic transition between tradition and modernity in a house that since 1692 has helped define what a classic Vintage Port should be.

Over the centuries, Taylor’s has declared only a few Vintage Ports per decade, and the rest of the industry has often looked to the house as a benchmark for quality. The 1977 edition stands as a monument to this uncompromising approach.
