Foursquare Mandamus 16 Year Old is an uncompromising and deeply fascinating rum from Barbados – created for collectors and connoisseurs seeking maximum intensity, authenticity and complexity. This limited edition bottling is the 29th release in the legendary Exceptional Cask Selection series and personally selected by Richard Seale. Mandamus is aged for a full 16 years in tropical conditions in Barbados and has undergone a rare double barrel aging. For the first 10 years, the rum has rested in former bourbon barrels, building structure, vanilla and spice, followed by 6 years in former Tawny Port barrels. This extra maturation adds an intense fruity depth and a dark, vinous elegance that elevates the rum to a very special level.

The rum is distilled as a Single Blended Rum, combining distillates from both pot still and column distillation. The combination of Foursquare’s triple Coffey column – which can run under vacuum to preserve the aromas – and pot still with column and two retorts produces a remarkably complex and layered flavor profile. Bottled at 57% cask strength with no chill filtration and no added sugar or color.

Tasting notes

Aroma: Intense and deep aroma with dark berries, prunes, raisins and ripe cherries. Underlying notes of cocoa, vanilla, nutmeg, cedar and light port.

Taste: Rich and powerful with layers of dark fruit, caramelized sugar, roasted nuts and spices. The port casks contribute vinous fruitiness and an elegant sweetness balanced by dry oak and spicy structure.

Finish: Very long and warm with notes of dark chocolate, dried fruit, spice and cask. Complex, dry and persistent.

History of the house

Foursquare Distillery was founded in 1995 by Richard Seale on the site of a former 18th century sugar mill. The distillery is family owned and has since established itself as an international benchmark for authentic Barbados rum.
