The story behind the Historic Collection

In the early 1700s, wine bottles were hand-blown and onion-shaped. They could not lie down and were therefore unsuitable for long-term storage. Instead, they were used to transport wine from the merchant’s barrels to the consumer’s table. Bottles were expensive and often reused – many bore the owner’s emblem or initials.

As the century progressed, bottles gradually became taller and more cylindrical. The onion-shaped model evolved into the so-called ‘hammer’ bottle, which by 1730 was well established in England. These bottles were still relatively low and wide, often with slightly tapered sides. Around 1750, the trend towards the more cylindrical shape took off and became the forerunner of today’s wine bottle.

This Limited Edition bottle is inspired by the historic “hammer-cylinder” model – a design that links modern port wine with its proud traditions of trade and craftsmanship.
