Niepoort Vintage 2005 – Classic Vintage Port from old vines in Douro

Niepoort Vintage 2005 is an elegant and structured Vintage Port from the traditional house of Niepoort in Douro. Made from grapes from some of the house’s most prestigious vineyards and from vines ranging in age from 60 to over 100 years, this vintage delivers depth, complexity and impressive ageing potential.

The grapes come from Vinha da Pisca, Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão – iconic parcels in the heart of the Douro Valley, where slate soils and steep terraces produce low yields and high concentration. The harvest took place in September and October 2005 and after traditional vinification, the wine was aged for two years in large balseiros barrels before being bottled in July 2007.

Niepoort Vintage 2005 is made from classic Douro grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Red Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and Tinta Roriz – a combination that provides structure, intense fruit and great aromatic depth. As a true Vintage Port, it develops primarily in the bottle and can be stored for many years to come.

Tasting notes

Color: Deep dark red with violet hues.

Aroma: Intense aroma of black cherries, blackberries and ripe plums, accompanied by floral notes, dark chocolate and light spice.

Flavor: Full-bodied and concentrated with firm tannins and great structure. Layers of dark fruit, cocoa and spicy nuances unfold in the mouth.

Finish: Long, powerful and balanced with elegant sweetness and persistent fruit.

Niepoort Vintage 2005 is excellent with blue cheese, strong cheeses and at the end of a good meal. It should be decanted before serving and enjoyed at 16-18°C. With proper storage, it will continue to develop for many years.

About Niepoort

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort and has been family owned for five generations. Today, the house is managed by Eduard Dirk Niepoort and Verona Niepoort, with Dirk at the helm since 2005. The house philosophy has always been to let generations work together to maintain and develop the distinctive style. The role of Master Blender has also been handed down to the 5th generation, José Rodrigo, who has been part of the house since 2006 and carries on the tradition with respect and precision.
