Niepoort Colheita 2009 – Elegant barrel aged port from the Pinhão Valley (Bottled 2019)

Niepoort Colheita 2009 is a classic and characterful Colheita Port from the Douro, created on old vines in the famous Pinhão Valley. This is a single-vintage port with more than 10 years of barrel aging that combines freshness, depth and refined complexity.

Colheita means that the wine comes from a single harvest. The rules require a minimum of 7 years of barrel aging before bottling, but Niepoort has allowed this 2009 to mature until October 2019. The result is a port with great integration between fruit, barrel and acidity.

The grapes were hand-harvested in October 2009 from vines that are more than 60 years old. The blend includes Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Red Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and Tinta Roriz. The wine is aged in traditional pipas – barrels that are over 50 years old – for a slow and controlled oxidation.

Tasting notes

Color: Clear amber with golden and slightly mahogany hues.

Aroma: Dried fruit, roasted nuts and orange peel. Fine notes of caramel and spice.

Taste: Elegant and balanced with layers of walnuts, figs and slightly candied citrus. The long barrel aging adds complexity without overpowering the freshness.

Finish: Long and harmonious with nutty notes and fresh acidity.

Serve slightly chilled and enjoy with ripe cheeses, nut-based desserts or as a quiet glass after dinner.

The House of Niepoort

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort and has been family owned since. Today, the house is run by 5th generation Eduard Dirk Niepoort and Verona Niepoort. Eduard Dirk has been at the helm since 2005 and has continued the house’s focus on quality, tradition and terroir.

At Niepoort, the generations work side by side to maintain the house style. The role of Master Blender has also been passed down and since 2006, José Rodrigo, the 5th generation in his family, has been in charge of blending. This continuity ensures a common thread in all the house port wines.
