The story of A.H. Riise

A.H. Riise was a Danish pharmacist, adventurer and scientist who settled on the island of St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies in the 1800s. Here he developed a number of recipes for spirits based on exotic ingredients, spices and botanicals from the Caribbean. His products quickly became popular among seafarers, traders and the Danish court.

In addition to his passion for spirits, Riise was also deeply interested in natural science. His large collection of plants, herbs and conch shells can be found today at the Zoological Museum in Copenhagen and in museums in Stockholm and Oslo.

Several animal species have been named after the renowned Danish scientist. One example is Corynopoma Riisei, also known as the swordtail characin – an unusual freshwater fish well suited for aquariums. The species was found in Trinidad and named by Theodore Gill in 1858.
