Unsun Karuta series – the final chapters of the distillery

From 2013 to 2023, the Nine Leaves distillery produced rum in the town of Otsu in Shiga Prefecture under the leadership of founder Takeuchi Yoshiharu. Inspired by traditional Japanese playing cards, the Unsun Karuta series was created as a tribute to the distillery’s last casks. The series consists of extremely limited Single Cask bottlings and small batches, marking the end of one of Japan’s most cult rum distilleries.

The UN OF “ISU” symbolizes balance, strength and stability – values that are clearly reflected in the rum’s structure and expression.

Barrel aging and style

This bottling is aged in ex-sherry PX casks, which add deep sweetness, dark fruit, warm spices and a rich, almost vinous complexity to the rum. The PX barrels provide a rich and intense profile that perfectly complements the high alcohol content and creates an impressive whole.

Tasting notes

Nose: Intense and concentrated with notes of dark molasses, raisins, dried figs, sherry, cocoa and warm spices. Elegant depth with a touch of Japanese precision.

Taste: Powerful and rich with layers of caramelized sugar, dark chocolate, dried fruit, orange peel and spices. The alcoholic strength is pronounced but nicely integrated, providing structure and length.

Finish: Very long, warm and persistent with sherry notes, spicy oak, dark fruit and an elegant, dry finish.
