Sangenís i Vaqué Lo Coster Blanc 2023 – rare white gem from the steep slate slopes of Priorat

Lo Coster Blanc 2023 from Sangenís i Vaqué is proof that Priorat can also deliver top-class white wines. An exclusive and characterful white wine, created in very limited quantities and with a clear imprint of the area’s dramatic terroir. A wine that combines power, elegance and minerality in a classy way – perfect for those looking for something special in the glass.

The wine is made from 85% Garnacha blanca and 15% Macabeo from over 40 year old vines planted on steep slopes around Porrera in Priorat. The unique llicorella slate gives the wine its characteristic minerality and structure. Fermentation and subsequent aging take place in new French oak barrels for four months, adding depth, complexity and texture without overpowering the freshness of the wine.

Production is extremely limited – only 3157 bottles of the 2023 vintage – making Lo Coster Blanc a rare experience and a great choice for the collector or the curious wine lover who wants to explore Priorat’s white side.

Tasting notes

The aroma is complex and inviting with notes of white flowers, citrus, lightly toasted oak and fresh herbs. The palate is full-bodied and texturally rich, with a nice richness from the barrel aging, elegantly balanced by a lively and precise acidity. The minerality stands out clearly and gives the wine suppleness and length. The finish is long, clean and nuanced with both freshness and depth.

History of the house – Sangenís i Vaqué

Sangenís i Vaqué is a family-owned winery with deep roots in the wine traditions of Porrera and Priorat. In 1978, Pere Sangenís and Conxita Vaqué replanted the family’s historic fields and became part of the movement that revived Priorat as a top wine region. However, the family can trace its winemaking heritage back to 1886, when Conxita’s grandfather, Josep Simó, produced and sold wine from the house in Plaça Catalunya – the same place where the wines are still made today. Today, the house is run by the next generation, Maria and Núria, alongside their father, with a focus on low yields, craftsmanship and wines with a distinct identity and terroir.
