Trappist Westvleteren 12 – Quadrupel 10.2% – The world’s most coveted Trappist beer

Trappist Westvleteren 12 is legendary among beer enthusiasts and is considered by many to be one of the best Trappist beers in the world. Brewed in the famous Saint Sixtus Monastery in Westvleteren, Belgium, this Quadrupel is known for its deep complexity, intense flavor profile and extreme rarity. An iconic Belgian monastic beer that combines tradition, craftsmanship and authenticity at the highest level.

Westvleteren 12 is brewed exclusively by the monks – or under their direct supervision – and therefore bears the official designation Authentic Trappist Product. Production is deliberately limited and the beer is only sold in small quantities directly from the monastery by prior reservation. This philosophy and limited availability has made Westvleteren 12 a collector’s item and a cult beer worldwide.

As a classic Quadrupel, it offers a powerful and full-bodied experience where dark malt, caramelized sugar and fruity yeast notes melt together in perfect balance. A beer that evolves in the glass and rewards the patient drinker. Serve at 10-14°C in a generous glass to bring out the aroma and depth.

Tasting notes

Color: Deep dark brown with amber reflections and dense, creamy foam.

Aroma: Complex notes of dried fruit, raisins, figs and dates, combined with caramel, dark syrup and a hint of spice.

Flavor: Rich and intense with layers of malt, brown sugar, dark chocolate and ripe fruit. Soft alcohol warmth and elegant carbonation.

Finish: Long, warm and harmonious with lingering sweetness, spice and light bitterness.

The story behind Westvleteren

The Saint Sixtus Abbey in Westvleteren is one of the few breweries in the world that can use the Trappist designation. The monks have repeatedly emphasized that they only brew the amount of beer necessary to run the monastery – not for maximum profit. Their famous motto reads: “We brew beer to live, but we do not live for beer.”

This uncompromising approach to quality, humility and tradition is part of the reason why Westvleteren 12 has achieved almost mythical status among beer connoisseurs. It’s not just a beer – it’s a living piece of Belgian monastic history.
