If rum has an absolute origin, it must be in the West Indies. Christopher Columbus discovered the islands on his second voyage in 1493. With him he brought sugarcane and found optimal conditions. The most suitable island for growing sugarcane was St. Croix. Due to its lush nature, ot was nicknamed "The Garden of the West Indies". It was from these sun-drenched islands that Albert Heinrich Riise sourced molasses from sugarcane when he started his rum-adventure in 1838. Black Coral is a rare type of coral that can be found deep in the waters that surround the West Indies and Central America. It is a product of the fertile environment that also provides nourishment and minerals to the sugarcanes used in our "Black Gem Collection". Black Coral is valued for its unique color and appearance. When properly polished black coral can achieve a beautiful shine and luster.

This unique rum is the first bottling from one of the 23 selected casks, which were considered the best by the Tasting Band during an exclusive tasting on April 12, 2019, out of the final 136 Caroni casks. Each cask was carefully decanted into 3 demijohns of 54 liters and stored at Caroni Paradise in Cognac, adding fantastic complexity and depth to this rum.

Cask #6130 comes from a special batch of Caroni that was migrated from Guyana in 2009 – a rare and historic note that makes this rum even more unique and valuable. It was distilled at the legendary Caroni Distillery in Trinidad, a distillery known for its powerful and distinctive rum, beloved by rum connoisseurs around the world.

But it doesn’t stop there. Caroni 1994 Paradise #8 is not just the result of traditional craftsmanship; it is also a work of art. Hampden Pagos is the result of partnerships with two renowned bodegas in Jerez: Lustau and Fundador. Several casks have been transferred from the Andalusian cellars to Hampden Estate, where they have aged the distillery’s rums. The first edition of Pagos was a blend of rums aged in ex-Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks from Lustau. This third batch of Hampden Pagos is a blend of 16 casks from Bodegas Fundador, which previously held Oloroso for up to 30 years, and is filled with Hampden’s signature HLCF mark (Hampden Light Continental Flavoured). This version has an ester content of 374.1 gr/HLPA.

Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich and complex. The aroma opens with cloves, roasted walnuts, blood orange, apricot kernel, and cherry liqueur. Over time, almonds, dates, and a hint of coffee liqueur emerge.
Palate: Intense and lively. Notes of cane sugar, chestnut honey, and tropical flowers dominate the palate. Subsequent tones of vanilla and cocoa beans add depth, complemented by fine tannins. The aftertaste features notes of camphor and geranium.
Finish: Long and full-bodied. Coconut milk and honeysuckle provide a fresh finish, while nuances of varnish, light tobacco, linden blossom, pepper rose, coriander, and nuts round out the experience.

Hampden Estate – A Legendary History
Founded in 1753, Hampden Estate has been distilling rum for nearly three centuries in Trelawny Parish – an area historically known as the "grand cru" of Jamaican rum. Since 2010, Hampden Estate has aged its rums on-site in the tropical Jamaican climate. In the 1970s, large distilleries took over the sale of their own products, and the tradition disappeared – but now Papalin is here to revive it.

For the 2024 edition, this means a combination of Worthy Park, which has matured for five years in ex-bourbon casks, and Hampden LROK, which has gained depth from ex-sherry casks.
