Domaine Pegau Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Da Capo” 2020 – one of the Rhône Valley’s most legendary wines
Domaine Pegau Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Da Capo” 2020 is one of the most coveted and rare wines from the Southern Rhône. This iconic wine represents the essence of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and showcases Domaine Pegau’s uncompromising approach to traditional winemaking. The result is a powerful, complex and deeply concentrated wine with impressive ageing potential.
The grapes for Da Capo come from some of the best parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyards are covered with the characteristic round stones known as “galets roulés”. These stones store heat from the sun during the day and release it at night. This helps the grapes ripen perfectly and gives the wine both intensity and structure.
The climate in the area is ideal for wine production. Warm days ensure optimal ripeness in the grapes, while cooler nights help maintain freshness and balance. The combination of terroir, old vines and traditional craftsmanship creates a wine with great depth and character.
Da Capo is made from 13 traditional grape varieties from the appellation. Grenache makes up the majority of the blend, providing fruit, warmth and richness. Syrah and Mourvèdre add structure, spice and depth, while the other varieties add complexity.
The vinification follows a very traditional method. The grapes are fermented whole in cement tanks without the addition of cultured yeast. After fermentation, the wine is aged for around two years in old oak barrels. This gentle approach allows the wine to fully express its terroir.
Domaine Pegau Da Capo 2020 is produced in very limited quantities and is considered one of the most prestigious wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine can evolve in the cellar for 20 to 30 years and will gain even more complexity over time.
Tasting notes
Aroma: Intense and complex with notes of dark berries, cherries and ripe plums. Nuances of spice, licorice, herbs and light smoke give great depth.
Flavor: Powerful and concentrated with layers of dark fruit, spices and warm Mediterranean notes. The tannins are firm but elegant.
Finish: Very long and complex aftertaste with notes of fruit, spice and minerality.
History of the house
Domaine Pegau is one of the most respected producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Féraud family has been growing wine in the area for generations, but the domaine was officially established in 1987 by Laurence Féraud.
The house is known for its traditional approach to winemaking with minimal intervention. The combination of old vines, natural fermentation and long barrel aging has made Pegau one of the most sought-after producers in the Rhône Valley.
