The House of Messiah

Messias was founded in 1926 when Messias Baptista was registered as an individual merchant at the Tribunal do Coméricio de Anadia. In the years between 1930 and 1940, he built the company’s foundation by purchasing and planting vineyards in the Bairrada region.

Between 1938 and 1943, the headquarters were built with a full basement and storage facilities, which are still in use today. In 1953, the company was transformed into a limited company under the name Sociedade Agrícola e Comercial dos Vinhos Messias. Until 1973, Messias himself was in charge, after which the next generation took over.

Today, Messias produces port, sparkling and still wines and exports to five continents. The combination of tradition, historic warehouses and modern know-how makes the house a significant player in the Portuguese wine world.
