Tequila Ocho Las Águilas Single Estate 2017 – authentic terroir tequila from Rancho Las Águilas

Tequila Ocho Las Águilas Single Estate 2017 is a tequila created with the same philosophy of great wines: one field, one harvest and a distinct terroir. All the agaves for this bottling come exclusively from Rancho Las Águilas, resulting in a tequila with a distinct identity and a flavor that reflects the soil and climate of this particular location.

The tequila is produced by renowned tequilero Carlos Camarena, the third generation of a family with deep roots in the world of tequila. Camarena is also behind well-known brands such as El Tesoro and Tapatio. With Tequila Ocho, he wanted to create a tequila where the origin plays the same role as in wine – hence the Single Rancho or Single Estate concept.

Rancho Las Águilas is located at an altitude of around 2,057 meters and has a slightly sloping and hilly landscape. The name means “The Eagles” and comes from the eagles that used to nest in a tree on the property. The history of the field is also unique – before the current agave plantation, the area was primarily used for grazing cattle, and before that agave was last cultivated around 1965.

As part of a bat-friendly program, the grower allows a small portion of the plants to develop their flower stalk – the so-called quiote. This allows bats to pollinate the agaves naturally and helps preserve the genetic diversity of the agave plants.

The agaves are grown naturally and only harvested when they are fully ripe. After harvesting, they are slowly processed to preserve as much of the natural agave flavor as possible. The result is a tequila with a clean, concentrated and balanced character.

This Extra Añejo is aged for at least 3 years in barrels that have previously been used 6-7 times. The light barrel influence ensures that the wood does not overpower the natural flavors of the agave, but instead provides an elegant roundness and complexity.

Tasting notes

The aroma offers fresh notes of baked agaves, citrus and light herbs with subtle notes of vanilla, honey and soft spices. The taste is rich and elegant with nuances of caramel, ripe agave, light pepper and citrus. The finish is long, rounded and complex with a beautiful balance between agave and cask.

The history of the house

Tequila Ocho was created in collaboration between Carlos Camarena and tequila ambassador Tomas Estes. The vision was to produce tequila with a distinct origin – with each bottling representing one specific field and one specific harvest.

The Camarena family has been making tequila for generations and is known for their traditional approach to production. By focusing on mature agaves, slow processing and minimal barrel influence, Tequila Ocho creates tequilas with a pure and authentic agave flavor.
