The story behind the Santos Dumont name

The name honors Alberto Santos Dumont (1873-1932), the Brazilian aviation pioneer, aristocrat and style icon who became world famous in the early 20th century. He moved to France in 1891 and designed, built and flew his own airships. In 1901, he achieved international fame by flying around the Eiffel Tower and winning the prestigious Deutsch de la Meurthe award.

Santos Dumont was also the indirect originator of the modern wristwatch when he asked his friend Louis Cartier to design a more practical watch for flying. The result was Cartier’s iconic “Santos” – the first wristwatch for men. Like its namesake, the Santos Dumont XO represents innovation, elegance and the courage to break new ground.
