The story behind Pikesville Rye

During Prohibition, most of the traditional Maryland Rye distilleries disappeared. Pikesville survived and became the only brand to keep this classic rye style alive after Prohibition. However, production stopped in 1972 until Heaven Hill bought the rights in 1982 and later relaunched Pikesville – now produced in Kentucky, but with respect for the original style.

The result is a modern interpretation of the Maryland Rye tradition, with extra aged barrels from premium warehouses providing greater concentration, complexity and balance.

Distillation and mash bill

Pikesville Straight Rye is produced on a classic mash bill consisting of:

• 51% rye
• 39% corn
• 10% malted barley

With a minimum of 51% rye, it fully meets the legal requirement for rye whiskey, but the combination with corn provides a nice balance between spicy intensity and rounded sweetness. Aged in new charred American oak barrels for at least 6 years adds depth, structure and warmth.
