Quevedo 40 Years Tawny Port – Extraordinary and rare barrel aged port from the Douro
Quevedo 40 Year Old Tawny Port is a top-class port – a rare and deeply complex tawny from the Douro, where four decades of aging in oak barrels have created a wine of impressive depth, elegance and concentration. This is a port for the discerning connoisseur, for the collector and for those who want a very special experience in the glass.
The color is intense mahogany with subtle greenish undertones at the edge – a classic characteristic of very old tawny port. As the nose approaches the glass, layers upon layers of aromas burst forth. It’s a 40-year-old tawny with enormous complexity and a silky texture, where the slow oxidation of the barrel over decades has refined every nuance.
Serve it slightly chilled at around 15°C, where the wine’s details and freshness are most apparent. It is excellent with dry cheeses, nuts, dark chocolate and less sweet desserts – but also works perfectly on its own as a meditation port, allowing you to immerse yourself in its many layers.
Tasting notes
Color: Deep mahogany with greenish reflections at the edge.
Aroma: Intense and complex with walnuts, hazelnuts, cinnamon, smoke, dried fruits, caramel and orange peel. An aromatic explosion with impressive depth.
Flavor: Soft and nuanced with fine layers of nutmeg, roasted coffee beans, nuts and caramel. Silky texture and perfectly integrated sweetness balanced by freshness and the elegant oxidative touch of age.
Finish: Very long, refined and persistent with spice, nuts and a subtle citrus note that lifts the whole.
The house behind – Quevedo
The Quevedo family has owned vineyards for generations and is based in São João da Pesqueira in the heart of the Douro Valley. In the 1970s and 80s, the family expanded their estate, Quinta da Alegria, and in 1991 they began producing port wine under their own name.
Like many smaller producers, Quevedo supplied grapes to major Port houses for decades, including Taylor (Taylor Fladgate & Yeatman), a testament to the quality of the grapes. In the hot vintage of 1975, Oscar Sr. had to start production himself – an event that marked the beginning of the house’s independent wine production.
In 1983, the family bought Quinta Vale D’Agodinho, today their most important field. Since then, both the fields and cellars have been expanded and over 100 hectares are now harvested. The grapes are picked by hand in small crates in the cool morning hours and brought to the cellar, where they are traditionally stepped in granite vats (lagares). Today, Quevedo exports port all over the world and is known for its uncompromising quality and respect for the proud traditions of the Douro.
