Niepoort Vintage 2000 – Iconic Vintage Port from Douro

Niepoort Vintage 2000 is a monumental vintage port from the traditional house of Niepoort in Douro. The year 2000 stands as one of the classic Vintage vintages, and this wine is made for collectors and Port lovers seeking depth, power and extraordinary aging potential.

The grapes come from some of the house’s most prestigious vineyards: Vinha da Pisca, Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão. The vines are over 60 years old and deliver low yields, but enormous concentration and complexity. Located in the heart of the Douro Valley, the slate soils and warm summers create perfect conditions for structured and age-worthy port wines.

The vintage was harvested in September and October 2000. After traditional vinification and intensive extraction, the wine was aged for two years in ancient oak toneis – large, classic oak barrels – before being bottled in September 2002. As a true Vintage Port, it develops primarily in the bottle and can be aged for decades.

Tasting notes

Color: Deep, almost opaque purple with a dark core.

Aroma: Intense and complex with notes of black cherry, blackberry and plum, accompanied by violet, dark chocolate and spicy undertones.

Flavor: Powerful and concentrated with massive fruit, firm tannins and great structure. Layers of dark berries, cocoa and spices unfold in the mouth.

Aftertaste: Extremely long and persistent with an elegant balance between sweetness, acidity and tannin.

Niepoort Vintage 2000 is ideal with blue cheese, strong cheeses or as a meditation wine after a big meal. It should be decanted thoroughly and served at 16-18°C. With proper storage, it can develop beautifully for several decades.

About Niepoort

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort and has been family owned for five generations. Today, the house is run by Eduard Dirk Niepoort and Verona Niepoort, with Dirk at the helm since 2005. The philosophy has always been to let the generations work together to maintain the style and identity of the house. The Master Blender role has also been passed down – today it is the 5th generation José Rodrigo who carries on the tradition and ensures continuity and quality in every bottle.
