Tasting Notes – Château La Grave à Pomerol 1998
The first nose reveals an inviting bouquet of ripe dark berries, forest floor, roasted coffee, and delicate notes of cedarwood. On the palate, the wine unfolds with silky tannins and a deep, velvety texture that only aged Bordeaux can offer. The flavor is dominated by sun-ripened plum, cherry, dried tobacco, and a touch of truffle and leather.
The finish is long, persistent, and marked by mature fruit and an elegant mineral undertone, stemming from the estate’s unique gravelly soil. This is a wine in top form – perfect for a hearty meal or as the centerpiece in a vertical tasting.

Vintage 1998 – A Challenging but Iconic Year in Pomerol
The 1998 vintage began with a cool spring and was followed by a warm, dry summer that gave the grapes unmatched intensity and concentration. Although the harvest faced challenges due to rain and early rot in October, the Merlot grapes from Pomerol delivered near perfection – and Château La Grave was no exception. This wine is a textbook example of how well Pomerol performed in 1998 – a vintage considered one of the best since 1990.

The Story Behind Château La Grave – From Trigant de Boisset to the Moueix Dynasty
Château La Grave traces its roots back to the 19th century and was for many years owned by the Trigant de Boisset family, who set the standard for quality in Pomerol. The name “La Grave” refers directly to the estate’s pure gravel terroir, renowned for producing wines with structure, finesse, and minerality.
In 1971, the estate was acquired by the esteemed wine producer Christian Moueix, who also oversees renowned properties such as Château Trotanoy and La Fleur-Pétrus. With his expertise and uncompromising commitment to quality, Moueix has elevated Château La Grave to the very top tier of Pomerol producers.
Today, the vineyard spans just 8 hectares – a testament to the estate’s dedication to quality and craftsmanship in every single bottle.
