Santa Sofia is a small but highly respected producer known for uncompromising quality and classic style. Recioto is the region’s historic sweet wine – the precursor to Amarone – and this 2020 release demonstrates why Valpolicella is among Italy’s most beloved wine regions.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes – primarily Corvina and Rondinella – are hand-picked and selected with great precision. They are then dried for about 3 months (appassimento method), which concentrates sugar, aroma and structure. The wine is then aged for 12 months in 225 liter French oak barrels from Allier before being bottled and aged for another 8-12 months. This meticulous process creates a dessert wine with power, elegance and complexity.

Tasting notes

Color: Deep ruby red with an intense glow.

Aroma: Sun-ripened cherries, jam and dried fruits with a hint of spice.

Taste: Rich and silky with notes of dark cherries, raisins and light spicy undertones. The sweetness is elegantly balanced by freshness and structure.

Finish: Intense, long and persistent – perfect for slow enjoyment.
