In chess, the opening move is crucial – and with The Chess Malt Collection A1 we have a true opening move. This exclusive 29-year-old Single Malt was distilled at Glen Grant in March 1994 and bottled in May 2023 after almost three decades of quiet maturation. Only 181 bottles exist – a true collector’s bottling for connoisseurs of mature Speyside whisky.

The whisky is aged in a Refill Barrel, which means the wood has given way to the distillate’s own character. The result is an elegant and refined style where the distillery’s classic fruitiness and floral nuances are allowed to shine through. Bottled at cask strength 53.6%, with no chill filtration and no added color – exactly as it left the cask.

29 years of aging provides an impressive balance of ripe fruit, soft oak and deep complexity. It’s not a heavy sherry bomb – but a fine, precise and layered Speyside where elegance and age speak louder than raw power.

Tasting notes

  • Nose: Delicate and complex with ripe pear, honey, citrus oil and delicate floral notes. Light vanilla and gentle oak in the background.
  • Taste: Silky and well-balanced with layers of yellow fruit, caramelized apple and subtle spices from the cask.
  • Finish: Long and elegant with dry, ripe oak and a lingering fruit sweetness.
