Mortlach 1957 “PING V” 50 Year Old Single Malt Whisky 41.7% – An icon from 1957

Mortlach 1957 “PING V” is not just a whisky – it’s a historical masterpiece. Distilled on May 21, 1957 and bottled exactly 50 years later on May 21, 2007, this rare single malt represents the essence of long, patient and selective maturation. A true collector’s whisky from a bygone era, bottled at cask strength of 41.7% after half a century in cask.

The whisky has been aged in a Refill Sherry Hogshead (cask 3019), providing a remarkable balance between the power of the distillate and the elegant influence of the sherry cask. The cask was filled at 110.9 proof (63.4% alcohol) and originally held 54½ bulk gallons (approximately 247⅔ liters). It was matured at Mortlach Distillery until 16.08.1982 and then moved to Elgin, where the long maturation continued under close supervision.

The result is a whisky of deep complexity, silky smooth texture and an almost meditative elegance. This is Mortlach from a time when time was the key ingredient – and when quality was measured in decades.

Tasting notes

Color: Polished amber with a golden glow.

Nose: Soft and fresh red fruits – dark cherries and juicy apples with a hint of icing sugar and cinnamon. Under the first fruity notes are orange peel and dark chocolate. Elegant floral notes of violets and hints of very old tawny port and dry Oloroso sherry linger long in the glass.

Taste: Sweet orange and malted sugar caress the palate. Soft, dry notes of Latakia tobacco, spiced apple wine, pine resin and dusty ginger nuts follow. Oily, dried apricots and roasted hazelnuts merge with a slightly dry and elegant sherry oak in a slow, deep finish.

Overall Impression: Surprisingly fruity, silky and rich in the mouth. The whisky embraces the palate and develops layer by layer with an almost euphoric elegance. A perfect picture of long, selective maturation and uncompromising quality.
