Château Segonnes Margaux 1988 – A Mature Bordeaux with a Rich History

Château Segonnes Margaux 1988 offers an exciting opportunity to experience a mature Bordeaux that has been aging in the bottle for nearly four decades. The wine comes from the prestigious Margaux appellation in the Médoc and embodies the classic elegance for which the region is known.

With age, the wine’s youthful fruit has evolved into a more complex and mature expression. Here, the focus is not on power and sweetness, but on finesse, developed aromas, and the unique experience that only an older Bordeaux can deliver.

Margaux from the classic 1988 vintage

1988 was a classic Bordeaux vintage, and after many years of bottle aging, this wine is now of particular interest to those who appreciate mature wines. Expect a well-developed profile where the fruit is accompanied by tertiary notes from the long aging.

Serve the wine with classic meat dishes, beef, lamb, or mature hard cheeses. Due to the wine’s age, it is recommended to handle the bottle with care and let it stand upright before opening so that any sediment can settle.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Ripe and nuanced with dark fruit, cedar, dried herbs, leather, and subtle spicy notes.

Palate: Elegant and well-developed with subdued dark fruit, classic Bordeaux notes, and a softer texture resulting from many years of bottle aging.

Finish: Mature and elegant with spicy, earthy, and slightly woody nuances.

The History of Château Segonnes

Château Segonnes has an interesting connection to Château Lascombes in Margaux. The vineyards were formerly part of the Lascombes estate but were spun off in the 1980s when the decision was made to focus Château Lascombes on the plots considered the estate’s most important terroirs.

Château Segonnes covered approximately 33 hectares and was, at that time, affiliated with Bass Charrington, which also owned Château Lascombes. This makes the 1988 Château Segonnes an interesting piece of Margaux history from a period when the estate’s vineyards and production were undergoing significant changes.
