Ornellaia “La Vitalità” Bolgheri, Tuscany 2023
Ornellaia “La Vitalità” Bolgheri 2023 is one of the world’s most sought-after Super Tuscans and a brilliant testament to why Bolgheri ranks among Italy’s absolute best wine regions. Here, the forces of nature and human craftsmanship come together in a wine of impressive depth, elegance, and balance. The 2023 vintage bears the name “La Vitalità,” which means “vitality, ” and it perfectly captures the wine’s energy, freshness, and harmonious character.
The wine comes from Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, where the complex soil conditions, the cool Mediterranean breezes, and the region’s warm climate create optimal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The extended aging in French oak barrels lends the wine extra finesse and complexity, while preserving the terroir in its purest expression.
The 2023 vintage was challenging, but nature showed its best side at the crucial moments. A mild winter led to an early growing season, while a rainy spring replenished the vineyards’ water reserves. The summer was warm without extreme temperatures, and rainfall throughout the growing season ensured slow and consistent ripening. Cool nights in September preserved the grapes’ natural acidity and developed an impressive aromatic complexity. The result is a wine with both concentration and freshness, and a perfect balance between power and elegance.
The grapes were hand-harvested into small 15-kg crates and sorted several times to use only the best fruit. Each grape variety and each individual vineyard was vinified separately. Fermentation took place in stainless steel and concrete tanks at 26–30 °C, followed by approximately 15 days of maceration. Malolactic fermentation took place primarily in French oak barrels. The wine then aged for 18 months in barriques, 70% of which were new and 30% had been used once before. After blending, the wine aged for an additional six months in barrels before resting for 12 months in the bottle prior to release.
Tasting Notes
The color is deep, intense, and vibrant ruby red. The nose opens with ripe blueberries, blackberries, and dark forest berries, elegantly accompanied by notes of toasted almonds, cocoa, and dark cherries. After a short time in the glass, the wine develops complex aromas of Mediterranean herbs, cedar, and graphite, which add extra depth and elegance.
The palate is full-bodied, concentrated, and at the same time remarkably silky smooth. The ripe fruit is combined with a lively freshness that energizes and elevates the entire tasting experience. The wine’s power is balanced by refined finesse and silky-smooth tannins, culminating in a long, complex, and lingering finish with nuances of dark chocolate, toasted nuts, spices, and minerality.
Ornellaia “La Vitalità” 2023 is a wine with enormous aging potential, but it can also be enjoyed young after decanting. It is an excellent pairing for grilled beef, lamb, game, truffle dishes, braised dishes, and aged cheeses.
