Planteray Jamaica 1984 Clarendon MMW 40-Year-Old Rum 57.2%
Planteray Jamaica 1984 is an extraordinary Jamaican rum and one of the most exclusive bottlings in Planteray’s history. With a full 40 years of aging, this is the oldest rum Planteray has released to date. A historic bottling created for the collector and the passionate rum lover.
The rum comes from the famous Clarendon Distillery in Jamaica and bears the classic MMW—Monymusk Wedderburn—mark. It was distilled in 1984 in a traditional double-retort pot still. This production method is an important part of the Jamaican rum tradition and creates an intense and aromatic distillate with great character.
40 Years of Jamaican Rum History
At the time of distillation, the rum had an ester level of approximately 290–300 ppm. This results in a distinctive Jamaican profile with great aromatic intensity, tropical fruit, and complex fermentation notes.
After four decades of aging, the powerful Jamaican character has developed impressive complexity. Ripe tropical fruit meets spices, herbs, and balsamic notes. Vanilla and nuts add depth, while lightly smoky and more animal-like nuances make the experience even more complex.
Only 317 numbered bottles
Planteray Jamaica 1984 comes from a single, unique cask. Only 317 numbered bottles have been released worldwide, making this bottling an extremely rare Jamaican rum.
Each bottle is personally signed by Planteray’s Master Blender, Alexandre Gabriel. Even the cork tells part of the story. The stopper is handcrafted from staves from the original cask in which the rum matured. Thus, a physical part of the cask’s long history accompanies every single bottle.
Planteray Jamaica 1984 was not created as an ordinary bottling. It is a tribute to Jamaican rum production, the Clarendon Distillery, and the immense impact that time and cask aging can have on a great spirit.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Very complex and intense with slightly smoky and meaty nuances. Tropical fruit, herbs, and tart notes develop in the glass. This is followed by vanilla and almost pastry-like aromas, along with cooked banana, bitter orange peel, and ripe pineapple.
Palate: Dry, complex, and elegant with a floral and fruity character. Rose water, soursop, pear, white grapes, apricot, and sugar apple come to the fore first. Then come coconut milk, balsamic notes, allspice, bread, and nuts.
Finish: Long, dry, and complex with tropical fruit, spices, nuts, and balsamic nuances. The many years of aging provide a lingering finish with great depth and a distinct Jamaican character.
Clarendon Distillery and Planteray Rum
Clarendon Distillery is one of Jamaica’s most traditional rum distilleries and is known for producing characterful spirits with distinct styles. MMW stands for Monymusk Wedderburn and represents an aromatic Jamaican style with a pronounced ester profile.
Planteray Rum was created by Maison Ferrand and Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel. The brand was formerly known as Plantation Rum. For many years, the house has worked with rum from some of the Caribbean’s most interesting distilleries, combining traditional production methods with carefully selected barrel aging.
With Jamaica 1984, Planteray takes this philosophy to the extreme. One cask, 40 years of history, and just 317 numbered bottles make this one of the house’s rarest releases.
